The Short Answer: Different Assets, Different Jobs
Use the name of the asset and the name of the network together. “Arbitrum” can describe the network in one interface and appear beside the ARB token in another, which makes a ticker-only comparison incomplete.
| Question | ||
|---|---|---|
| What is the asset here? | Arbitrum governance token | Ether |
| Does it pay ordinary Arbitrum One gas? | Not the standard fee-paying balance | Yes, when held on Arbitrum One |
| Does holding it assign an automatic income payment? | Holding alone does not define a reward product | Holding alone is different from participating in a separate staking product |
| Does its network matter? | Yes; the supported token contract and chain must match | Yes; Ethereum and Arbitrum balances are separate |
These distinctions describe functions, not a prediction about which price will perform better. A network’s adoption or a token’s unit price does not by itself answer that investment question.
Compare What You Can Do with Each Asset
Start from the action you want to take. Different actions require different balances and, sometimes, additional permissions.
Participate Through ARB
The token supports governance participation under the DAO’s processes. Delegation assigns voting power; it should not be confused with paying gas or buying a guaranteed income stream.
For reward claims, read how to evaluate ARB staking and delegation. A product that advertises yield needs its own funding, contract and exit conditions.
Pay for Transactions with ETH
ETH in the relevant sending account can pay ordinary transactions on its network. ETH on Ethereum mainnet pays that chain’s transaction costs; ETH on Arbitrum One serves the corresponding role there.
The guide to ETH gas for moving ARB shows how to use the wallet estimate. Owning the right fee asset on a different network is not sufficient.
Read the Network Alongside the Ticker
The same address format can be used across compatible chains without combining their balances. A wallet displaying one public address does not establish which network a provider will use for a payout.
Check the order’s sending asset, sending chain, receiving asset and receiving chain separately. For ARB on Arbitrum One, the token contract is distinct from your account’s receiving address; copying the contract into a destination field does not select the token for your account.
Choose the Balance Needed for Your Next Action
If you want governance-token exposure and already hold ETH, an ETH to ARB exchange converts between assets. On arbswap.net, that route takes ETH on Ethereum mainnet and delivers the token on Arbitrum One.
If you only need gas for an existing holding, obtaining more ARB does not solve that fee requirement. Identify the required balance first, then choose a transfer or conversion that actually delivers it on the needed network.
